The History of Birthstones: Where They Come From and What They Mean

The idea of birthstones has a long and fascinating history that blends tradition, spirituality, astrology, and symbolism.

While the exact origin of birthstones is unclear, their use has been traced back to ancient civilizations and sacred texts across cultures, both Eastern and Western. Over time, these stones became associated with specific months, evolving into the modern birthstone system we use today.

Where Did the Concept of Birthstones Come From?

One of the earliest references to birthstones appears in the Bible. The Book of Exodus describes the breastplate of Aaron, a religious garment adorned with twelve different gemstones. These stones represented the twelve tribes of Israel and later inspired connections with the twelve months of the year, the twelve zodiac signs, and even the twelve apostles.

By the 3rd or 4th century, it became customary to own all twelve stones and rotate them monthly for good fortune. By the 18th century, the practice shifted—people began wearing just the stone linked to their birth month. This trend likely originated in either Germany or Poland.

Outside of Judeo-Christian influences, other cultures also contributed to the birthstone tradition. For example, Hindu texts from the 19th century list stones associated with the zodiac signs, known as rashis. In Western astrology, gemstones are also tied to zodiac signs based on planetary connections.
