Ring Sizing

Ring Sizing

Getting the perfect ring fit matters. At Copeland Jewelers, we’ve been offering expert ring sizing in Austin for over 40 years. Whether it’s an engagement ring, a wedding band, or a family heirloom, we make sure your ring fits your finger comfortably—never too tight, never too loose.

How Ring Sizing Works

Ring sizing isn’t just about measuring your finger once. It involves careful attention to detail and a deep understanding of how rings interact with your hand shape, skin, and daily activity. Factors that affect your ring size include:

  • Time of day: Your finger size may change slightly from morning to night.
  • Weather: In warmer months, we retain more water, causing fingers to swell. In colder weather, your fingers may shrink slightly.
  • Knuckle size: If your knuckle is larger than the base of your finger, your ring needs to slide over the knuckle but still fit snugly once it’s on.
  • Ring width: A wide band fits more tightly than a narrow one. We adjust our sizing tools to match the band width of your specific ring.

Our jewelers know that a ring should fit comfortably snug—tight enough so it won’t fall off but loose enough to slide over your knuckle without forcing it.

When to Resize a Ring

It’s not uncommon to need a ring resized once or twice during its life. Your finger size can change due to weight loss, pregnancy, injury, or simply over time. When that happens, we’re here to help.

But it’s important not to resize a ring too often or too dramatically. Each time a ring is resized, especially if gemstones are involved, it puts strain on the ring’s structure. Resizing up too far can warp the shape or loosen stone settings. That’s why our jewelers evaluate every ring before deciding how to proceed. We’ll explain your options and help you make the safest choice for your jewelry.

If your ring includes gemstones, we may need to remove and reset them during the sizing process. For white gold rings, rhodium plating may be added afterward to restore its bright, white finish.

Ring Sizing Prices

Ring sizing starts at $55 for a plain, narrow 14K gold ring (as of 2024). Final pricing depends on several factors:

Sizing a ring down is typically less expensive than sizing it up. For rings wider than 4mm or those with gemstone settings, bring it in for an estimate. The most accurate pricing comes from seeing the ring in person.

Rhodium or Yellow Gold Plating

Trying to resize a ring for someone without giving it away? Here are a few ideas:

  • Borrow a ring they wear on the same finger and bring it in—we’ll measure it for you.
  • Trace the inside and outside of their ring on paper.
  • Slide their ring onto your own finger and mark where it stops.
  • Ask a friend or family member to help. They may be able to sneak a ring out or casually talk about jewelry to get hints.

Even if the guess isn’t perfect, it gives us a solid starting point. A ring can always be adjusted again for a better fit.
