A fine watch is the hallmark of a fine man. Few other aspects of men’s fashion convey style and position better than his watch, and no watch does it better than one from Cuervo y sobrinos. Their products are Swiss made but have a rich, fascinating Caribbean history. Copeland Jewelers, your Austin watches destination, is the exclusive dealer of Cuervo y sobrinos watches in Central Texas. Prepare to be amazed by the company’s incredible story…
In 1882, Armando Río y Cuervo and his brothers took over the watch-making business that had been established by their uncle Ramón. (“Cuervo y sobrinos” means “Cuervo and Nephews” in Spanish.) Located in Havana, Cuba, the most storied and cosmopolitan city of the Caribbean islands, the company soon became immensely prosperous. The family was quite shrewd when it came to business and incredibly creative when it came to jewelry- and watch-making. And during the first half of the twentieth century, Havana became a playground for the rich and famous of North America, South America, and Europe. Cuervo y sobrinos counted among its repeat customers such storied names as Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Neruda, Clark Gable, and more.
While the business grew and expanded in Cuba, the highly coveted quality and Latin flavor of Cuervo y sobrinos’s fine watches led them to open additional offices in Pforzheim, Germany; Paris, France; and La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, the hub of Switzerland’s stunning watch-making empire. Suddenly, however, Cuba fell into political turmoil – businesses were seized, borders were closed, and the famous Cuervo y sobrinos brand seemed to be finished.
But all was not lost: Forty years later, an Italian family purchased the historic company, and the Cuervo y sobrinos safe was finally re-opened during the 1990s, revealing the famous Golden Book that recorded the names of the company’s storied clientele and original watch designs. Today, the Swiss watchmakers who craft new pieces for Cuervo y sobrinos draw inspiration from the incredible history and the timeless style and unique Latin flair emobodied in the company’s original designs.
Today, each precious Cuervo y sobrinos watch is nestled in a luxurious wooden case that can also be used as a cigar humidor. Smoking fine cigars is another Cuban tradition with a rich history, and each wooden watch case is appointed with gold plated hinges and a humidity gauge. No adhesives are used in the boxes’ construction, so as not to alter or influence the aroma and flavor of any cigars the customer chooses to store in them.
